PEOPLE can enjoy a new activity to keep healthy.
Anyone aged 50 or over, who lives in Hartlepool and wants to get fitter, can take part in a new Nordic Walking course.
It is a Scandinavian fitness technique using walking poles, which can burn off up to 47 per cent more calories than normal walking.
A six-week introduction to Nordic Walking course is being organised by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Sports Development Team in partnership with Age UK Teesside.
It will be held on Tuesday nights from 6.30pm-7.30pm in the town’s Summerhill country park, starting on August 30 and costs £12 per person.
Rachael Pringle, the council’s sports development officer, said: “Nordic Walking is one of the fastest-growing fitness activities in the world because it’s very effective, affordable and a lot of fun.
“The walking poles help to propel you along at a faster pace than normal walking without you feeling the effort.
“It can be done anywhere, is easy to learn and doesn’t require expensive clothing or equipment.
“What’s more, our sessions will be taking place in the marvellous leafy countryside of Summerhill.”
Similar courses are also being planned for different age groups.
