A CREW of firefighters were goaded and sworn at by youngsters as they sparked blazes across a village.

The team from Peterlee Fire Station were called to Shotton Colliery at 8.40pm yesterday after a rubbish fire was started on the cycle track in Hawthorne Terrace, followed by another 100 yards up the path.

Three wheelie bins which had been left out following the waste collection were then set on fire in Victoria Street, with another found alight in Byron Terrace.

The crew used a Pac-Lider, which is a backpack filled with water, to put out the fires.

Police were called to track down the gang, with anyone with information asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

While one crew dealt with the incidents in Shotton Colliery, the station’s other team was called to the beach banks in Blackhall at 8.30pm and 9.20pm after grass was found on fire.
