CHILDREN got an insight into the work of a firefighter and took the chance to try out the equipment in a fire engine.

Youngsters at Cheeky Monkeys Nursery, in Mapleton Road, in Hartlepool, learned all about safety and what to do in an emergency as part of National Firefighter Day.

After a morning of fun activities in the classroom, the youngsters then got the unique chance to sit in a fire engine.

Officers from Stranton Fire Station made the short trip to the nursery and showed them exactly how the fire engine works.

Carly Fields, nursery manager, said: “We decided to celebrate National Firefighter Day and it went really well.

“We were talking to the children about safety and what they need to do in case of an emergency.

“They now know they need to call 999.

“We got in touch with the local fire brigade and they came along so the children could learn even more about what they do and why their job is so important.”
