Cleaner theft from store

A THIEF has been fined after he stole a vacuum cleaner from a supermarket.

Matthew Ritchie, 23, walked out of Tesco, in Belle Vue, Hartlepool, with the £189 Dyson.

Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard how he ripped the security tag off the cleaner and later sold it for £45.

Ritchie, of Somersby Close, Hartlepool, admitted theft on February 22.

Barry Gray, mitigating, said the theft was committed “entirely on the spur of the moment” after going in the shop for refreshments.

Mr Gray added: “He expresses remorse and shame.”

Ritchie, a plasterer, was fined £140 and told to pay £189 compensation.

He was also made to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
