A HOSPICE is set for a cash boost after shop bosses proved they were charity champions.

A fundraising event will take place at Ye Olde Durhams Club, on Stockton Road, to raise money for Hartlepool & District Hospice on Friday, August 15.

The night has been organised by staff at the Co-op store, in Stockton Road, with the shop choosing a charity to back each year.

The store’s assistant manager Matthew Caldwell has arranged the event, which will feature horse racing as well as bingo, singers and a hot buffet.

There will also be a raffle to boost the funds on the night, with a TV set as the main prize.

Matthew, 25, said: “Every year we choose a charity to back, and this year we asked our customers and they all put the Hartlepool & District Hospice forward.

“Everybody in the town must know how much hard work the staff at the Hospice do, and and we have all had a friend or family member who has been affected by cancer so it is a charity which is close to our hearts.

“We did a fundraiser for Butterwick Hospice a couple of years ago and raised about £1,400, so we’re looking to beat that this time around.”

Collections which have taken place in the store have already raised £400, and Matthew is hoping for a good turn out at the club to help raise as much cash as possible.

The Wells Avenue-based Hospice needs to raise around £2.2m each year, and 80 per cent of that figures comes from donations from the public.

Matthew added: “The Hospice is a fantastic cause, and the fact they keep providing such a wonderful service to the people of Hartlepool despite having such a large amount of cash to raise each year makes it even more worthwhile.

“Hopefully out fundraiser will make a few pounds for them to help them.”

Tickets are priced £3, and are available from Co-op on Stockton Road or Ye Olde Durhams Club.
