DRIFTING sand whipped up by high winds has forced the closure of a car park at a popular seaside resort.
Hartlepool Borough Council has taken the decision to close the Coach Park on the site of the former fairground at Seaton Carew - behind the golf club - until after the Easter weekend due to continuing poor weather conditions.
As reported in the Mail earlier this week, the area along The Front was blasted with sand as gale force winds blew in off the sea.
With the forecast remaining bleak for the Bank Holiday weekend, council chiefs have closed the car park until next week.
Parking manager Phil Hepburn said: “Due to recent high winds the site has become covered in sand blown off the adjacent beach, blocking vehicle access.
“We have been trying to clear the access road to the car park but despite the best efforts of our workers the sand just keeps blowing back.
“Given the weather forecast for the next few days, it is unlikely that we will be able to clear the site and re-open it to traffic until after the Easter weekend.
“We apologise for any inconvenience that this might cause to members of the public.”
Visitors to Seaton Carew have been advised to park in the nearby Rocket House car park or along the unregulated areas of The Front until the main car park is safe to re-open.
