COASTGUARDS have warned people to stay out of the water at Hartlepool Marina after two men were caught swimming on Saturday afternoon.
Hartlepool RNLI and the Humber Coastguard were alerted of the men in the water at around 3.30pm.
By the time they arrived the men had got out of the water.
But a coastguard spokesman said: “Fortunately the lads got themselves out of the water safely.
“I suspect they were in high spirits, but however good an idea it seems to be at the time, the water is always colder than you think and there will always be underwater hazards that you aren’t aware of.
“And people aren’t as good at swimming as they often think they are.
“Fortunately this incident didn’t end badly, but the standard warning applies, people should stay out of the water at the marina.”
