RESIDENTS woke to find they were in the middle of a TV set when stars from the small screen rolled into their communities.
A production crew from the popular ITV detective series Vera have been shooting scenes in Horden and Peterlee this week.
Filming has been taking place in Wilkinson Road and Cook Grove, in the Crossroads area of Horden, and the Oakerside area, in Peterlee.
Locals had to do a double-take when they spotted the stars of the show Brenda Blethyn, who plays no-nonsense Newcastle cop, DCI Vera Stanhope, and David Leon, who plays her side-kick Joe Ashworth, out and about.
Production team bosses say they specifically chose East Durham over other North-East locations – including Newcastle, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay – for their unique qualities, including Horden’s sea views and Victor Pasmore’s controversial Apollo Pavilion, in Peterlee.
The scenes will feature in episode four of the fourth series of Vera, to be screened next spring.
The plot involves a family story that opens with the discovery of a body found drowned in the River Tyne.
The filming comes after the spotlight was shone on Horden in 2011, when BBC 1960s detective show Inspector George Gently was filmed in the village.
