HUNDREDS of families are expected to attend an annual family fun day this weekend.
The Rift House East Residents’ Association is hosting its fifth annual family fun day and organisers say they have lined up a feast of fun for all.
Association members have been working on plans for the fun day for the past year.
Organisers say the event – which will include a car boot sale, stalls, children’s activities, a climbing tower, and pony rides – is about bringing the community closer together.
The event is being staged at Rift House Recreation Ground, off Kingsley Avenue, on Saturday, August 20, from 8am.
Labour councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, chair of the association, said: “As always the event is not about making money it is an opportunity for the community to come together.
“The residents’ association has worked tirelessly over the last year with a wonderful team of volunteers ensuring we retain our Rifty Youth Project, community garden and other key events at a time when funding is scarce.
“A special thank you has to go out to all the residents in the wider community who support the association’s projects with individual fund raisers and donations.
“In Rift House we don’t need a Big Society, because we already have it.
“We are an inclusive residents’ association and are open to anyone with community spirit.”
Hundreds of families turned out to support the event last year which included Coun Akers-Belcher, who represents the Rossmere ward, having his prized locks shaved off.
He came face-to-face with the razor to help raise £975 in sponsorship for the popular Rifty Youth Club.
Coun Akers-Belcher, who won’t be shaving his head this time round, added: “As always the day will commence at 8am with a giant car boot sale, which is always a popular attraction.
“Pitches are available at £5 and they can be booked by contacting myself.
“There is scheduled to be a funfair, craft stalls, climbing tower, pony rides, bouncy castles, face painters, music and the usual refreshments.
“New this year will be the walking water balls plus we have additional entertainment lined up.”
