SIMPLY the TOPs! That’s the Targeted Outreach Project which provides fantastic help for children.

The richly deserved winner of our Community Group award makes a real difference to levels of anti-social behaviour in Hartlepool. They’ve plummeted by 45 per cent since it started.

The scheme, funded by the Safer Hartlepool Partnership and delivered by eight staff including co-ordinator Nicola Evans, provides services to children who would otherwise be hanging around on street corners.

The team gets youngsters involved in youth projects, even picking them up in a minibus to ensure they get there.

Nicola said: “We have strong links with the community safety section and the police. That works for us when we are helping young people. We try to break down barriers.”

TOP is run by staff at the Belle Vue Sports Community and Youth Centre, in Kendal Road.

Centre general manager Alex Sedgwick said: “TOP links very well with the other work that we do at the centre where we provide activities for children aged five to 19.”
