And they are urging the people of Hartlepool to join in by displaying their knitting and crocheting skills for charity.

Two Hartlepool shops, Tea@Hart and Jencraft, are supporting the Pink Ribbon Foundation which has a mission to help UK charities which help people affected by breast cancer.

The shops are teaming up at Tea@Hart in York Road on Tuesday, August 30, from 11am to 5pm as part of the Big Pink Tuesday initiative.

Jencraft will donate crochet and cross stitch kits for people to make while they enjoy teas and cakes from tea@Hart, whose owner Jeni Hart said: “We are very excited at being involved. It is an opportunity to support cancer charities which are close to our hearts.”

Jencraft is run by Jennie Longmire and her mum Gayle Longmire who said: “The idea is to get people to crochet, or embroider a pink ribbon for 50p and then we will send them to DMC suppliers who are making them into the ‘biggest, pinkest ribbon in the world.”

Once the ribbon has been created, it will be unveiled at Hampton Court Handmade Fair endorsed by Kirsty Allsop. The donations will also go to the foundation.

Gayle added: “We want to raise as much money as we can, and make as many pink ribbons for this worthwhile charity.”

People can also make and decorate cakes in return for a donation. To find out more, visit the Facebook pages of either shop.

Gayle explained more about why she was supporting the charity drive.

“I have got two friends with breast cancer and wanted to do something for them.

“The more we can make the better and I thought that this way, we can give something back.”

Crochet and cross stitch kits are also available for people to buy in advance if people are unable to make it on the day, or if they want to bring along a completed project.

People will be asked to make a donation per completed item and it will all go to the foundation.
