FOSTER children could be set for a trip of a lifetime as a team of fundraisers get set to drive a clapped-out car 1,500 miles across Europe.
Jacqui Cameron, chairman of the Hartlepool Foster Carers Association, will be joined by her husband William and their pals Barry and Angela Rundle on an intrepid trek through France, Switzerland and Italy to Monte Carlo.
The journey is known as Monte Carlo or Bust, and sees teams of drivers from across Europe driving bangers to the final destination in the name of charity.
The fab four snapped up a banger for £250, and set about giving it a Disney theme, as all funds raised from their adventure will go towards paying for a trip for foster children to go to Disneyland Paris.
The team, who have called themselves The Dizzy Disneys, will start their trek on the Hull to Zeebrugge ferry on Wednesday before the race gets under way from Namur, in Belgium, on Thursday.
Kitted out in fancy dress, the team will drive through some of Europe’s most picturesque locations before reaching Monte Carlo at the weekend, where they will complete a lap of the famous racetrack.
All of the teams will be faced with various challenges along the way, with organisers handing out prizes at the finish line.
Jacqui hopes to raise around £5,000 from the trip, and has been boosted by a generous gesture from Hartlepool United boss Colin Cooper, who was impressed by their efforts.
Mum-of-three Jacqui, from Sunny Blunts, Peterlee, said: “We bumped into Colin at the Mail’s Pride awards recently, and told him what we were doing.
“We had hoped to get a signed shirt or a ball to raffle off, but he said he would make a donation from his own Finlay Cooper charity to match whatever we raised so we really are grateful to him for that.
“We’ve had a lot of help from various businesses as well, so we’re all really looking forward to setting off now and raising as much money as we can.
“Some of the children from Hartlepool and East Durham who we are doing this for have never had a holiday before, so this really will be a trip of a lifetime for them if we can raise enough to take them to Disneyland.”
William, a mechanic, and taxi driver Barry will share the driving responsibilities and the plan is to scrap the car at the finish line before flying home.
Jacqui added: “Hopefully we can get to the finish line without any mishaps, and I’m sure we’ll have a good laugh along the way.”
As well as Colin Cooper, the team also thanked Rolls-Royce, Chevron Taxis, Redline Taxis, Peterlee Central Club, Houghton’s PLC and All Things Fun for support.
