Captain Kevin Jones of Hartlepool Golf Club and another ten fellow members raised more than £3,000 for Hartlepool & District Hospice in a bike ride challenge - despite one of the group sustaining an injury.

The team of eleven, plus a support driver, completed the course over three days, returning to the golf club for well-earned refreshments and celebrations.

One of the group, John Patterson, unfortunately sustained an injury on the second day, but vowed to return to the accident spot and complete the journey.

The golf club has enjoyed a lengthy relationship with the hospice, with the charity being nominated as the Captain’s Charity a number of times over the years. Members of the club also support the hospice by taking part in the Great North Run each year.

Greg Hildreth, a fundraiser at the hospice, said: “We receive tremendous support from the members of the club and have enjoyed a really positive relationship with them for many years.

“Kevin and his team’s Coast to Coast cycle ride has been a remarkable success and I would like to thank everyone involved and all who supported them.

“I would also like to wish John a speedy recovery. Kevin has visited the hospice and seen first-hand how we support our patients and I hope that this has helped to motivate him in his fundraising, which is going brilliantly.

“As ever, all the money raised will be used to fund our patient care services.”

Kevin said: “The Coast to Coast challenge was one of the hardest things I have ever undertaken personally but the camaraderie from the other riders and support drivers made this an enjoyable experience.

“Special thanks to all our friends, family and Hartlepool golf club members for all their contributions towards raising a fantastic amount for this most worthwhile local charity.”

The club’s next fundraising event is a sponsored walk on June 18 from Peterlee to Hartlepool Golf Club via a local pubs.
