IRRESPONSIBLE dog owners who allow their pets to foul on playing fields are being shown the red card.
Durham County Council has launched a crackdown in response to concerns from residents about the issue.
Former Newcastle United star, Olivier Bernard, who owns Durham City Football Club is backing the month-long campaign.
He said: “Children have a right to play in clean and safe areas which are free from dog mess.
“It is unacceptable for people to allow their dogs to foul anywhere, including on playing fields and football pitches.”
Fifteen areas used by children will be targeted in the campaign including Welfare Park and Playing Fields at Horden and Oak Road Park in Easington.
Neighbourhood wardens will patrol the areas and people who fail to clean up after their pet will be slapped with £80 on the spot fines.
Campaign leaders will go into schools and also offer free microchipping.
