The Hartlepool youngsters who wowed an audience with their fundraising dance moves

Forty children knew exactly what to do when they were challenged with raising money for play equipment.

They organised their own ‘performance day’ which attracted around 50 people to the school in Seaton Lane, for a show which included all sorts of dance routines.

They also raised money by selling cakes, sweets and juice. The end result was a fantastic £80 raised and now the children will meet once more - this time to decide what sort of play equipment they would like.

Year 3 teacher Sarah Barton said: “The children in years 3 and 4 at Golden Flatts Primary School took their headteacher’s plea for fundraising to heart, and organised a performance afternoon.”

She said head teacher Sue Sharpe “challenged every class in the school to try and do something to raise money to buy new playground equipment that the children could use on a lunchtime on the yard.”

Year 3 and 4 children, who are aged from seven to nine years old, put their heads together and decided to perform their street dance and skip dance routines that they had been learning.

Sarah added: “Year 3 have been learning street dance from Gil Parker, and perfected their routine, to Uptown Funk, as part of their PE sessions earlier in the year.

“Although they had performed it in school as part of a class assembly, they had not been able to share their learning with their parents and carers.

“They teamed up with the Year 4 class, who recently won bronze in a local skip dance competition. Their routine included many different skipping manoeuvres including face to face and pretzel.”

Sarah added: “After performing their dances to visitors, children were able to teach their skills to their parents and friends.”

She said the class council would meet again to decide what sort of play equipment they would like. And as for putting on another show, Sarah said it was definitely something the school would consider again.
