A COUPLE from Hartlepool who raised thousands of pounds for diabetes research have won a volunteering award.
Vikki and Jonathan Owens won the Fundraising Award at Diabetes UK’s regional Inspire Awards, held in Durham..
The pair have two daughters, Lucy and Violet, who both suffer with Type 1 diabetes.
It was their experiences which spurred them on to raise money for research into the condition.
Together they recruited a team of volunteers and staged a hugely successful Family Fun day at Hartlepool Power station where Jonathan works as an electrician
Over £3,700 was raised for Diabetes UK, and then Vikki also braved the freezing North Sea for the annual Hartlepool Boxing Day dip and raked in another £700.
She and Jonathan were delighted to receive the award on Saturday, February 1.
Vikki said: “We are doing this fundraising for Lucy and Violet. We’d like to think that we are giving something to Diabetes UK so that some day a cure can be found which makes life better for them.”
Type 1 diabetes is the most common form in childhood and is currently treated with insulin.
