STUDENTS at a dance and theatre arts school are set to enter their first competition just months after their academy first opened.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the youngsters at the new Michelle Brown Academy of Dance & Theatre Arts, based at The Studio, in Tower Street, Hartlepool.

Within just months of starting, these students were performing in their first show. Now, they are set for both exams and their first competitions.

Academy founder Michelle Brown, 29, said: “It is going to be a great experience for them. They have got exams with the London College of Music next month. They have also got their first festival and their first championship.”

The academy will have nine students in the festival which will be held in Hartlepool. The academy will also be represented at a championships in Chester-le-Street in County Durham.

“I am excited and I hope that they will do really well,” said Michelle who added: “Some of my students have never done this before. I have got dancers from four to ten years old.”

Michelle trained at the internationally-renowned Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and as a British Association of Teachers of Dance member.

She has already taken on 18 students within the first few weeks of unveiling her new business.

She teaches them everything from dancing lessons to microphone techniques, as well as musical theatre. It also covers tap, ballet, modern dance and drama.

Michelle is born and bred in Hartlepool and lives in the High Tunstall area of town.

After going to the Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts, she got work on Broadway and then came home to Hartlepool to teach in another dance school.
