A COUNCIL has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

Stockton Borough Council, the reigning holders of the Association of Public Service Excellence Overall Council of the Year award, has again been short-listed for the title.

The council, which covers Billingham, Wynyard and Wolviston, is one of only eight local authorities in the running for the coveted crown which recognises excellence in front-line local government services across England and Scotland.

Leader of Stockton Borough Council, Councillor Bob Cook, said: “I am delighted and proud the council is again being recognised for the fantastic work of our staff who are highly committed to providing quality services for all our borough’s residents.

“Despite the challenging economic times, their commitment has not faulted and to be short-listed again is a true reflection on our continuous focus on service delivery.

“Our staff continue to go that extra mile to do their very best for our residents and I would like to congratulate them for that.”

As well as Overall Council of the Year, the council has also been shortlisted in the best employment and equality initiative; best catering service; best highways, winter maintenance and street lighting service categories.

The winners will be announced on September 8.
