A MAN has been made a milionaire after he struck lucky on the Premium Bonds.

The man, who has only been identified as living in the County Durham area, scooped £1m with winning bond number 186XG471615, which was first bought in November 2011.

In County Durham, there are more than 190,000 Premium Bonds holdings worth more than £300m.

Across the UK there are over a million unclaimed Premium Bonds prizes worth more than £46 million.

In County Durham in particular there are more than 5,000 prizes worth more than £240,000 that still remain unclaimed.

He has just £2 invested in Premium Bonds and the prize was won in September 1979.

There are a number of other unclaimed prizes due to the residents of the County of Durham, the oldest of these outstanding prizes having been drawn in May 1973.

For the April 2014 draw, the premium bonds generator ERNIE paid out more than 1.8 million prizes, worth more than £51m.

There were 47,485,235,758 eligible bond numbers in the draw.

There is no time limit for claiming prizes, and Premium Bonds holders can reduce the chances of their prizes becoming unclaimed by managing their Premium Bonds online or opting to have any prizes paid directly into their bank accounts.
