RUSH-hour traffic was held up after a cow broke loose by the side of a dual carriageway.
The large animal had broken free from a field near the A19 on the outskirts of Hartlepool and wandered down towards the traffic.
A passing police patrol car spotted the danger and the northbound carriageway of the A19 was briefly closed at 8.40am yesterday.
Officers were helped by a local farmer in removing the problem beast from the patch of land near Ron Perry’s Services, near the Elwick turn-off.
Police say the drama was over by 9am.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A large cow had got free from a field and was seen on a grass verge by the side of the A19.
“The animal never went onto the road, but it was closed as a precaution while police helped the cow back to its field.”
