THE A19 has been reopened by police after a three vehicle smash caused long delays this morning.

The northbound carriageway was closed between Murton and Seaton after the pile-up, just after 7.45am.

A 23-year-old woman had to be cut free from her car and was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering with severe whiplash.

Two other men suffered whiplash but didn’t need hospital treatment.

Four fire service crews were called after the smash and traffic was diverted around the scene via a layby.

Vehicles were tailing back as far as Peterlee after the crash.

But Durham Police opened the carriageway again at 9.05am.
