A MUM who milked the benefits system for more than £70,000 has been jailed.

Fraudster Lisa Smyth claimed thousands she was not entitled to for almost eight years by lying to officials that she was a single parent.

In reality, her then partner was living at her home and helping with the family finances.

The mum-of-three sobbed as she was led away to prison for five months at Teesside Crown Court.

The judge said he had to send a clear message that the court would not stand for benefit fraud.
