A 43-year-old man appeared in court charged with murder following the death of a man who suffered head injuries.
No plea was taken from Leslie Dowson during a short preliminary hearing, held today at Teesside Crown Court.
Dowson, of St Oswald's Street, Hartlepool, is accused of the murder of Stanley Burgon on November 21, last year.
Police were called to Rydal Street in Hartlepool following reports of a disturbance.
Mr Burgon, 56, was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he died three days later.
Peter Makepeace QC, defending, said he had yet to have a case conference so was unable to give any indication of plea.
Judge Stephen Ashurst adjourned the case until April 28, when the charge is expected to be put to Dowson.
The judge remanded Dowson in custody.
