Action call to tackle sexual abuse of children

HUNDREDS of children were subjected to sickening sexual abuse last year, according to figures from the NSPCC.

Rape, incest and abuse through prostitution and pornography were among the crimes inflicted on 307 youngsters in the Cleveland area, while in County Durham there were 253.

The charity, which offers a sexual abuse programme locally, is now calling for parents, the Government and schools to take greater action to drastically reduce the figures.

Children can also contact counsellors at ChildLine on 0800 1111 and anyone who suspects a child has been sexually abused should ring Cleveland Police or Durham Police on 101.
