TWO suspected arson attacks in East Durham are believed to be linked.

A Landrover and car were destroyed by fire at Hurworth House, in the Castle Eden area, just after 7pm on Sunday.

Within minutes, fire crews were called to another suspicious blaze at a terraced house in North Road, Wingate.

There were fears people may have been trapped inside the terraced property but it turned out to be empty at the time.

The ground floor suffered substantial fire damage.

Firefighters had to break into two properties on either side of the house, which were also empty, due to the level of smoke.

Five fire engines from Peterlee, Seaham and Durham attended and put the blaze out.

Fire watch manager Ray Silleto, of Peterlee Fire Station, said: “A fire investigation is underway between ourselves and the police.

“It is believed the incidents are linked.”
