A competitive cyclist has been left devastated after raiders made off with four specialist bikes worth £11,000.

Shaun Tyson and his family were asleep at home in quiet cul-de-sac Tavistock Close, Clavering, Hartlepool, when thieves struck overnight on Tuesday.

He awoke to find four high end machines had been taken from his garage when he got up yesterday morning.

Shaun, 44, a former member of the GB cycling squad in the early 90s, said: “A lot had been built from scratch. They are not something you can just go to Halfords and buy a new one.

“It is like having a death in the family.”

The machines taken were a white Scott Foil road bike, a Canyon Time trial bike in matt black with no wheels, a Kinesis road bike in luminous green and a Cube GTC Pro mountain bike in dark and luminous green.

Shaun, a health insurance broker, who runs North East Healthcare Solutions, added: “We have dogs that bark if anyone comes up the drive or were to come from the fields at the back, so they have managed to do it very quietly.

“There was a set of wheels half way down the drive and another in the door of the garage so it is possible they have been disturbed and ran.

“People have been targeted elsewhere in the country because it is known they have high end bikes.”

Shaun, a married dad of two, is a member of the Adept Precision Racing Team. The competitive racing season has recently finished but still trained several times a week.

He said: “Until I can get something sorted out I won’t be able to cycle at all because every single one of my bikes has gone.”

The break-in is believed to have happened between 10.20pm on Tuesday and 6am on Wednesday.

Police are appealing for anyone who has been offered any of the bikes, shown above, for sale or has information about the thefts to call Pc Catherine Bage on the non-emergency 101 number, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
