A three-week-old baby has died after being bitten by a dog in Sunderland early today.

Police were called to an address in Falkland Road, Ford Estate, at 4.15am this morning.

They found the baby boy had been bitten, and after being taken to hospital he later died.

The dog involved, a small terrier, has been removed from the address and is likely to be destroyed.

Inquiries are on-going to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Superintendent Gillian Mitchell said: “This is obviously a very tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the baby at such a difficult time.

“We are carrying out inquiries to establish the circumstances of the incident and will have extra officers in the area to allow this to be done.

“Officers will also be on patrol to offer reassurance to the local community who may be concerned.”

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is helping police with their inquiries.

The parents were named locally as Maria Blacklin, 29, and Ryan Young, 30, and their tragic toddler as Reggie.

The couple have two other children, a boy and a girl, and Mr Young is believed to have another son from an earlier relationship.
