Bookshop ban for single mum

A SINGLE mum-of-two has been slapped with a nationwide bookshop ban after she stole because she had no money.

Katie Bennett went into WH Smith, in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Hartlepool, and selected magazines and Plasticine worth £56.53 from the shelves.

The 37-year-old left the shop without paying for the goods and was followed by security guards outside.

Prosecuting, Helen Kesterton told Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court: “The defendant was detained and the magazines and the Plasticine were recovered.”

Bennett, of Raby Road, who has two teenage children, pleaded guilty to theft from August 3.

Mitigating, John Relton said: “This was a fairly straight forward shop theft which my client failed to succeed in completing.

“She has a number of issues which she does get help with.”

Chairman of the magistrates’ bench Peter Heron sentenced Bennett to a six-month community order and banned her from entering all WH Smith stores.
