POLICE are reassuring people that there has been no widespread tampering of cash machines amid rumours criminals have targeted a host of outlets.
Concerns were raised in Hartlepool after claims that seven cash machines across the town had been rigged with scanning devices which steal people’s bank details and PIN numbers.
But police say they have only received one report a month ago about money being taken out of a person’s account, and investigations are still ongoing into that matter.
They say there is not a widespread problem in the town and are unsure how the rumours, which have been posted on social networking websites, started.
PC Anthony Wallace, of Hartlepool Police, said: “Police are investigating this one incident, but I would like to reassure people in Hartlepool that everything seems in order.
“However, I would ask people to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious.”
PC Wallace can be contacted on the non-emergency number 101.
