Chemical theft sparks warning

POLICE have issued a warning after a large amount of chemicals were stolen from a hospital.

A total of 24 five-litre plastic containers of the chemical Xylene and 10 five-litre containers of pure alcohol were taken from the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton.

The theft took place sometime between Thursday, July 7, and Friday, July 15.

People in Hartlepool and east Durham are being warned the chemicals can be dangerous if misused.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Xylene can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands and police are urging anyone who comes across the containers to contact police immediately.”
