A CRUEL bogus caller stole cash from the home of a 95-year-old woman.
The crook called at the home of the pensioner, who lives in the Middleton Road area of Hartlepool, and said there were problems with her boiler and that he needed to check for a gas leak. He then stole the cash.
Cleveland Police released details of the crime and warned people in Hartlepool to beware following a spate of uninvited doorstep calls to homes in the town.
A spokeswoman said: “There was five reports of a man visiting addresses in Crail Walk, Crieff Walk and Claymore Walk on Friday afternoon last week. He stole a small amount of cash from one property, however, it’s currently unclear if he stole anything from other addresses.”
Detective Constable Rebecca Hudspeth, from Hartlepool CID, added: “It’s no coincidence that these properties housed elderly and vulnerable people. Residents should not allow cold callers access to their home.”
People should get at least three quotes for any work, have family or friends present, and check with companies to see if they have sent someone to read meters or check equipment. Anyone who may have been visited by the man is asked to call Detective Constable Rebecca Hudspeth on 101.
