A woman has said her claim of rape was a false allegation after police in Billingham launched an inquiry into her report.

Cleveland Police launched the probe after a suspected attack in the Kenilworth area of the town in the early hours of yesterday.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and a section of the street was cordoned off.

But earlier this afternoon, Cleveland Police stood down the probe after the woman confirmed that her earlier rape report was a false allegation.

The man has been released from police custody with no further action.

The force has said there will be no ongoing police involvement and officers are no longer appealing for witnesses.

Officers have said they would like to thank members of the public for their patience while they conducted initial inquiries.
