Female shop assistant threatened with ‘hand gun’ in armed raid by gang wearing ski masks

A woman was subjected to a terrifying robbery when a group of males wearing ski masks burst into a shop and threatened her with what she believed to be a handgun.

The incident happened at Northside Stores, Trimdon Grange, at 6.45pm on Thursday.

Police would like to thank members of the local community for their assistance. As a result five local males have now been arrested and are currently in police custody.

Durham Police

The males threatened the female shop assistant, who was alone in the store at the time, and demanded cash from the till.

However, they made off with just a quantity of cigarettes.

Five males in their late teens and early twenties arrested on suspicion of robbery late Thurday evening. They remain in custody.

Durham Police also seized a number of items from an address in Northside Terrace, including a ball bearing gun.

A spokesman said: “Police would like to thank members of the local community for their assistance.

“As a result five local males have now been arrested and are currently in police custody.

“To reassure the public, the weapon used in the incident is believed to have been an imitation firearm.

“We would like to thank local residents for their patience ,whilst the incident was dealt with as quickly as possible, and brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

“A further update will be provided in due course.”
