FIRE crews in Peterlee were called to tackle a blaze at the beach banks in Horden today.
Crews from the station were on the scene near Cotsford Lane for about forty minutes this afternoon.
Approximately 5,000 sq meters of grass and gorse was ablaze and firemen used beaters to put out the flames.
Watch manager, Ray Sillito, said this spot is becoming a target for youngsters starting fires and the crews have been called to the same area at least ten times in the last month.
He said: “The message from us is that when we are tied up down there we are not available to attend other fire emergencies, it is a huge waste of manpower.
“The other thing of course is that it destroys the natural habitat for the coastal wildlife.”
