POLICE are hunting a nuisance thief who has been swiping door handles from homes.
A crook has struck at 10 houses across the Headland area of Hartlepool.
It is thought the metal handles are being taken to weigh in as scrap for quick cash.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A number of door handles were stolen in the Headland area of the town overnight on Monday, August 13, into Tuesday, August 14.
“We would like to appeal for anyone with information regarding these thefts to contact police.”
The crimes occurred on Regent Street, Regent Square, High Street, Catherine Street and Baptist Street.
Theft of metal is down in Hartlepool after operations were launched by police last year after a spate of incidents across the town.
Officers have been posted on the gates of scrapyards to check those entering, tighter restrictions have been put on those trying to trade-in scrap and plain-clothed police have been patrolling the town’s streets at night to catch thieves red-handed.
Any witnesses or anyone with further information can contact PC Mark Raine, of Hartlepool Police, on the non-emergency 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
