Hunt for hit-and-run driver

POLICE are hunting a motorist who crashed into the car of an off-duty officer who had stopped to warn drivers of a fallen tree.

The white-coloured car hit the driver’s door of the parked BMW that had stopped in Elwick Road, close to the junction with Park Avenue in Hartlepool.

The officer had stopped in the road and put his hazard warning lights on to warn people of a tree that had fallen over near Ward Jackson Park and blocked the road.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “While he was alerting other drivers and informing the homeowner of the fallen tree, another vehicle collided with his parked car and made off.”

The BMW has been left with a large crease and dent to the driver’s door and a lot of white paint has been left on the door.

Any witnesses to the incident, which took place at around 8pm on Wednesday, or anyone with further information is asked to contact Acting Sergeant Neil Dixon, of Hartlepool Police, on (01642) 302110.
