AN investigation is planned into the cause of a fire which destroyed a crane at a scrapyard.
A crane driver at Sims Metal Management on Hartlepool’s Longhill Industrial Estate, had a lucky escape when his machinery caught fire, as reported in the Mail on Saturday.
Today a Sims spokesman said: “Fire crews attended the incident and the fire was quickly and fully extinguished. There are no reported injuries of any kind.
“We take this incident extremely seriously and we will be conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
“Any measures to ensure a similar situation does not occur in the future will be implemented following the results of the investigation.”
Two crews from Stranton Fire Station were called to the scene around 10.15am on Friday and spent 40 minutes putting out the flames. About 15 staff were evacuated.
The crane’s engine compartment and cab were completely destroyed.
