POLICE are appealing for witnesses after jewellery was stolen from a gallery during a celebrity Christmas light switch on event.

The items were stolen from Hartlepool Art Gallery, in Church Square, while Coronation Street star David Platt – actor Jack Shepherd – was carrying out a meet and greet with town fans.

A woman is said to have sneaked into the gallery while everyone was distracted by the event and stole a jewellery box from a display.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “Police are appealing for information after jewellery was stolen from Hartlepool Art Gallery after the town’s Christmas lights switch on event.

“At around 6pm on Wednesday, December 3, a soap opera celebrity was doing a meet and greet session in the Art Gallery, on Church Square, when a woman, described as wearing a white coat and white hat was seen to steal a jewellery box from a display.”

Police would like to speak to the female member of the public who reported this theft and also to anyone else who may have information on the woman responsible.
