A MAN has appeared in court charged with murder after a mum was stabbed to death.

Paul Alan Smart, 49, of Eddleston Walk, Hartlepool, was charged with the murder of 50-year-old Angela Smeaton and appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court.

Smart, wearing a dark blue T-shirt showing off tattoos on his lower left arm, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

He didn’t enter a plea.

He was remanded in custody and will now appear at Teesside Crown Court tomorrow for a bail hearing.

District Judge Martin Walker said: “By law this court cannot entertain any bail application.

“You will remain in custody until tomorrow morning when you will be produced at Teesside Crown Court for a hearing.

“You are entitled to make a bail application if so advised.”

Angela, who owned Ange’s Chippy, in Owton Manor Lane, was found with serious injuries at her home, in Eddleston Walk, Hartlepool, in the early hours of Tuesday. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police remained at the scene of the death yesterday and forensic experts carried out investigations throughout the day after arriving early on the morning.

Shocked neighbours expressed their devastation after waking to the grim news on Tuesday morning.
