POLICE have charged a man in connection with two serious assaults on different victims in Hartlepool town centre.

The 27-year-old suspect has been charged with committing a Section 18 and Section 20 assault.

They include an attack on a 26-year-old man who is fighting for his life in hospital after he suffered serious head injuries.

He remains in a critical condition in James Cook University Hospital after he was attacked at around 4.20am on Sunday at a bus stop near Yates’ wine lodge, in Victoria Road.

The suspect has also been charged with an attack on a 24-year-old man near the Grand Hotel who suffered serious facial injuries.

He received treatment at James Cook University Hospital before being released.

Inspector Mark Hall of Cleveland Police said: “A 27-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault, Section 18 and Section 20 assault and will appear at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.”
