A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after dousing himself in petrol and setting fire to himself.

Durham Police received a call at around 6.15pm on Thursday from the 47-year-old man, who was threatening to harm himself.

The man, who police say has a most recent address of Ferryhill but may have lived in the Wingate area, had been classified by police as a high-risk missing person.

Officers launched a search to find him and ensure his safety.

Later that evening, after an extensive search the man was found on a public footpath in the Metal Bridge near Ferryhill.

A police spokesman: “On approaching to offer assistance officers found that the man had doused himself in petrol and ignited himself.

“Officers immediately took action and managed to extinguish the fire.”

The man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle with severe burns where he remains in a critical condition.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Officers continue to be in close contact with the man’s family to keep them informed and offer support.
