A MAN is in hospital with a fractured skull and cheekbone after being hit with an unknown object in a “despicable” attack.
A 30-year-old man from Easington Colliery was rushed to Sunderland’s Royal Hospital after being hit over the head during broad daylight.
The incident is said to have taken place around 4.45pm in Station Road, Easington Colliery, at the top of the stairway opposite Corbett Street.
The man also suffered bruising to his back during the unprovoked attack.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
Detective Constable Steven Smith, of Peterlee CID, said: “This has happened in broad daylight and in a public place.
“It’s despicable and has been unprovoked.
“The victim is saying he has been hit over the head with some form of object, but it is not clear what at this stage.
“We would appeal for any witnesses to come forward.”
