Man threatened with axe in Hartlepool race-hate attack

A gang who racially abused and assaulted a young man in Hartlepool are being hunted by police.

Officers have appealed for information after the 19-year-old was racially abused and assaulted between 4pm and 4.10pm on Saturday in Freemantle Grove.

The victim was cycling towards Seaton Lane when a grey van with three men inside deliberately swerved towards him.

They caused the victim to take evasive action for his own safety.

The men began shouting racial abuse at the victim and threw a Coke can at him, which struck him above the eye.

The driver got out and waved an axe towards the victim, before getting back in the van when he picked up a stone to defend himself.

Police said the victim did not receive medical treatment after the incident.
