FOUR masked men armed with weapons burst their way into a house before threatening the owner and ransacking his home.
Detectives have launched a probe into the “terrifying” attack, which they say has left the victim, in his mid-40s feeling “vulnerable”.
Police are asking members of the public for help in tracing the thugs responsible for the “serious” attack, which happened between 8.30pm and 9pm on Tuesday.
The man was home alone when the raiders forced entry before threatening him.
Police say they made a search of his house, in Brackendale Court, Shotton Colliery, but left empty-handed.
Detective Sergeant Cliff Down, of Peterlee CID, said the motive for the aggravated burglary is unclear at this stage.
He added: “The masked men approached the householder and made a search before leaving empty-handed.
“The victim suffered a minor injury and we believe one of the men had some sort of implement.”
Det Sgt Down added: “The victim has been left shaken up and feeling a little bit vulnerable, but he has got family in the area who are supporting him.
“We would like the community in the Brackendale Court area to help with any information they may have.
“This was terrifying for the householder, it’s been quite a serious incident, which took place during hours of darkness while he was in the house alone.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact Peterlee CID on 101 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
