Mum-to-be bought heroin for herself

A PREGNANT drug user was caught by police in possession of heroin.

Kelly Evans was caught with the Class A drug after police saw her buying the substance from another man, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court was told.

The 34-year-old, who is due to give birth next month, was arrested and four wraps of the drug was found hidden in her bra.

Prosecuting, Andrea Milson said: “She accepted she purchased the heroin from the man and spent £35 on that. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) accepts that it was for her own personal use.”

Evans, of The Cliff, in Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin on July 21 last year.

Mitigating, John Relton, told the court: “She was caring for her mother who has Alzheimer’s but meeting with an old acquaintance brought her back into addiction again.”

District Judge Martin Walker was told by the Probation Service that Evans was progressing on a Drug Rehabilitation Order (DRR) and told her: “You are doing well. I am impressed. Please carry on, for the sake of your baby as well.”

He sentenced her to a six-month conditional discharge.
