A MURDERER who stabbed his ex-wife in the neck in front of shocked neighbours has died while serving a life sentence in prison.

Joseph Iley, 61, from Emmerson Court, Horden, died of suspected natural causes in Preston Prison, Lancashire.

Newcastle Crown Court was told in June 2007 that Iley had killed Margaret Iley, 57, as she begged and screamed for her life.

Iley had just been released from a prison sentence for harassing Mrs Iley when he calmly plunged a blade into her neck and chest 10 times while helpless friends and neighbours look on.

Iley, who pleaded guilty to murder, was told he would have to serve at least 16 years before he could apply for parole.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “HMP Preston prisoner Joseph Iley died on Monday October 7, of suspected natural causes.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.”
