He replaces Dave Pickard, who retired from the force in April.

ACC Nickless said: “I’ve visited Cleveland a number of times prior to starting here last week, and I have been impressed by the dedication and commitment to serving our communities that I have seen so far from the force.

“I am delighted to join the Chief Officer team, and look forward to sharing the experience I gained from working as a Divisional Commander in Nottingham City. I’m particularly keen to ensure we deliver the best possible service to our communities, to build confidence and ensure our partnership working is as efficient as it can be.”

Cleveland Police’s Chief Constable Jacqui Cheer said: “Simon will be an asset to the Chief Officer team.”
