A pervert has been ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for seven years after spying on a girl using a CD to look at her reflection.

Ronald Shiel-Pawlie admitted three charges of observing a person doing a private act without their consent for his own sexual gratification when he appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court.

In a pang of conscience he admitted what he had done and said it wouldn’t happen again.

Alison Howey, prosecutor

Alison Howey, prosecuting, said he told police he used the CD because he had seen it in a film.

She said: “In a pang of conscience he admitted what he had done and said it wouldn’t happen again.”

The girl’s mum read out her daughter’s impact statement to the court which said: “I feel sick, I don’t want to go out.

“I feel ashamed. I felt ugly and I started to feel better. Now I’m back to square one.”

Neil Bennett, mitigating, said: “He is acutely aware of the suffering he has caused.

“He has abject remorse and only has himself to blame.”

Shiel-Pawlie, 33, of Hall Crescent, Horden, was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and two years of supervision with rehabilitation activity for 60 days.

He was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for seven years and will be subjected to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for five years.

He was told to pay court costs of £85, a victim surcharge of £80 and criminal court costs of £180.

Chairman of the magistrates’ bench Lynn Jordison said: “We have discussed compensation and whilst acknowledging the distress caused, it’s probably so great that it would be an insult to put any kind of figure on it.”
