Police have issued a safety warning to motorists after hazardous weather conditions taking hold in the North East sparked a spate of road crashes this morning.

Drivers are being urged to take care when behind the wheel as temperatures plunge in the region.

Ice-covered routes have led to a number of collisions on the roads this morning - with one collison forcing part of the A19 at Peterlee, between the B1320 and the A181, to be closed earlier this morning.

Durham Constabulary’s Road Policing Unit have tweeted this dramatic picture of the aftermath of a crash - and are urging motorists to take care as icy blasts and heavy rain continue to batter the North East.

The Durham RPU said: “Roads all over the county are treacherous this morning with ice.

“A19 particularly bad with several RTC’s.

“Take care.”

The Met Office say that temperatures could fall to as low as -3C today.
