A man has appeared in court charged with assault following the injury of a policeman in Hartlepool.

Officers were called to the Spar Store in King Oswy Drive in the town at 6.45pm on Saturday night to reports of a disturbance.

A policeman received lacerations to his forearm from a knife.

Police deployed a taser and a local man was arrested and taken into custody.

A 36-year-old appeared before Teesside Magistrates' Court on Monday charge with a section 18 assault and other charges.
